Read, Write, Reflect.
The Power of Prose is a series of writing workshops for high schoolers to fill in the creative gaps in the traditional classroom experience. Teaching for standardized tests, performing rigid text and grammar analyses may be necessary tasks in school, but ones that leave little time or space to help the kids develop their own creativity, which is just as essential. Once they are ready to apply to colleges their junior year, they should have a developed sense of their own writing style in order to stand out to college admission boards. My small-group summer workshops and retreats will give kids a competitive advantage through elevating their self-expression.
What is the Power of Prose?
The Power of Prose offers lessons in finding your voice to tell your story in a compelling way. From middle schoolers preparing for high school to juniors looking to stand out in a sea of college application essays, my small group writing intensives offer the opportunity to receive personalized, in-depth instruction and feedback to strengthen skills and build self-confidence. In the end, participants will have a piece of writing that pops with authenticity and individuality.
In a supportive, inviting environment, students will learn to reflect, revise, and critique, skills that will set them apart and bolster their self-confidence beyond the classroom. As AI takes over many tasks in the human world, having a distinctly human and relatable voice will be crucial across many industries. My offerings are an important building block they’ll use throughout their lives.
What Do You Want to Learn?
Many parents might agree: teens are primed and pumped for an argument. This course will make them actually good at it. In school, in work, in life in general, having the ability to organize and articulate your thoughts on paper will puts you ahead of the game, no matter the game you’re playing. In this workshop, writers will learn to build a claim using evidence, avoiding emotional overreaction, and write opinion pieces that showcase their intellect and maturity.
In a small and intimate group, kids will find the courage of their convictions, through reading and reflecting on mentor texts, group discussions and feedback, guided and independent writing time.
They will leave with a finished piece of persuasive writing, and a bolstered self-confidence that will carry them through the coming school year and beyond.
